G20 meetings to be held in Jammu Kashmir


India will host the G-20 summit 2023 in Delhi, while some meeting of G20 summit will be hosted in Jammu and Kashmir for the next year 2023. India will hold the G20 presidency from December 2022 to November 2023, and will convene the G20 leaders’ summit in 2023 for the first time. G20 summit for the year 2022 will be hosted by Indonesian in Bali.


This will be the first major international event to be held in Jammu and Kashmir after abrogation of article 370. For this purpose Union Territory of J&K's government has set up a five-member high level committee for overall coordination. The main events of the G20 summit 2023 are proposed to be held in New Delhi.

G20 is an influential grouping that brings together the world's major economies. India is also planning to hold some of the events of G20 in J&K so that the foreign leaders from G20 countries, could also visit the Union Territory of J&K. This move by India is to assert its claim on J&K as an integral part of its territory and reject Pakistan’s claim on it before the international community.

The Political parties in the Jammu & Kashmir have welcomed the government's move. Altaf Thakur, state spokesperson, Bharatiya Janata Party, said", The G20 summit is not only a proud moment for the union territory but for the whole country. It used to happen in foreign countries and now happening here. It is a great thing. They discuss the business plans and all strong nations like France, Britain and Germany are a part of it. They plan a roadmap for the future and it's a proud moment for Jammu and Kashmir. The PM has been working on the development of Jammu and Kashmir and this proves it. After the abrogation of article 370, this summit being held here is something no one would have dreamt of, there is a change on the ground in the valley. ''

G20 is a politico-economic alliance comprising 20 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

India has been a member of the G20 since 1999 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been leading India’s representation at G20 summits since 2014.

China's Reaction


China has opposed India's plans to hold G20 meeting in Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, "We have noted this latest development. China's position on the Kashmir issue is consistent and clear-cut. The Kashmir issue, a dispute left from the past, should be peacefully and properly addressed in accordance with the UN Charter, Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreement."

Pakistan's Reaction


Pakistan has already opposed India's plan to hold some meetings of G20 in Jammu & Kashmir and reached out to Turkey, Saudi Arabia and China, conveying its objection to India's plan to hold meetings of G20 in Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
