When and Where Kumbh Mela is organized?

Historically four cities are recognized as sites where Kumbh Mela is organized. Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years among four religious cities along holy rivers: Haridwar on Ganga, Nasik on Godavari, Ujjain on Shipra, and Prayag (Prayagraj) on Sangam (Confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati). Celebration of Kumbh Mela at every city is based on astrological position of Sun, Moon and Jupiter.

Prayag:

When Jupiter enters in Aries and with Sun and Moon in Capricorn on Amavasya (New Moon), Kumbh Mela is held in Prayag.

According to one more calculation, when Jupiter enters in Taurus and Sun enters in Capricorn, Kumbh Mela is held in Prayag.

Haridwar:

When Jupiter enters in Aquarius and with Sun in Aries, Kumbh Mela is organized in Haridwar.

Nasik:

When both Jupiter and Sun enters in Leo, Kumbh Mela is organized at the bank of river Godavari.

One more options is found in Puranas for Kumbh Mela in Nasik.

When all three Jupiter, Sun and Moon enter in Cancer on Amavasya (New Moon). Kumbh Mela is held in Nasik.

Ujjain:

Kumbh Mela is held in Ujjain when Jupiter enters in Leo and Sun enters in Aries.

Another option is found in Puranas for Kumbh Mela in Ujjain.

When Jupiter, Sun and Moon enter in Libra on Kartik Amavasya (New Moon). Kumbh Mela is organized in Ujjain.

Why is Kumbh Mela organized?

According to ancient Hindu mythology, four drops of nectar (Amrit) from a pot (Kumbh) were spilled in the rivers adjacent to four places. According to mythology, Gods and Demons churn the ocean (Sagar Manthan) to bring out a pot of nectar from the ocean. The Gods and Demons fight over this pot of nectar in order to gain immortality. During this fight over pot, four drops of nectar spilled in the rivers at four places. At present these four places are well known as Haridwar, Prayag, Nasik, and Ujjain. This is the origin of four Kumbh Melas.

What are Akharas, Naga Sadhus and Shahi Snan (Royal Bath) in Kumbh Mela

One of most unique thing and integral part of Kumbh is its Akharas. An Akhara is group of armed Sadhus. There is a grant arrival of Akharas of Sadhus in every Kumbh Mela sitting on elephants or chariots driven by horses. Many Akharas enters with swinging swords and tridents by Naga Sadhus. The Akharas were formed by Adi Shankaracharya to armed saint so that they can protect themselves and Sanatan dharma from invaders. Initially Adi Shankaracharya created seven Akharas: Mahanirvani, Niranjani, Juna, Atal, Avahan, Agli and Anand. But later due ideological differences they are divided into 13 categories. In 2019, Prayag Kumbh Mela "Kinner Akhara for transgender" was also introduced.

Mass gathering of Sadhus from all over the India takes part in every Kumbh Mela. Million of Sadhu pilgrims attend the Kumbh Mela. Among these Sadhu Pilgrims, the most popular is Naga Sadhus. Mostly, Naga Sadhus are seen in Kumbh Melas. They are followers of Lord Shiva and lives in Himalaya. Only at the time of Kumbh they come down from the Himalaya. They sacrifice all material pleasures and desires. Even Nagas don't clothe. Naga Sadhus are also known as Naked Sadhus and they carry weapons like tridents and swords. Naga Sadhus eat only once in a day and must eat whatever they have been given. Females are also Naga Sadhus, but they cover themselves with yellow cloth.

The first bath which is taken by Sadhus/Saints in Kumbh Mela is known as "Shahi Snan (Royal Bath)". Only after Royal bath of Sadhus, other people can get chance to take holy bath.

Kumbh Mela: happen every three years in one of four cities: Haridwar, Prayag, Nasik, and Ujjain.

Ardha Kumbh: Ardha Kumbh Mela happens in Haridwar and Prayag in every six years. Kumbh Mela 2019 held in Prayag was Ardha Kumbh Mela.

Purn Kumbh: Purn Kumbh Mela happens in every 12 years. Kumbh Mela Haridwar 2021 will be Purn Kumbh.

Maha Kumbh: Maha Kumbh Mela happens every 144 years after 12 Purn Kumbh Melas. Jupiter completes its cycle of 12 zodiac signs in 12 years. Therefore Maha Kumbh Mela happens after 12 × 12 = 144 years.
