The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13, 2021 gave final approval to the Rs. 48,000 crore proposal to buy 83 Tejas LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Mk 1A for Indian Air Force. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said: "This is the largest indigenous defense deal. It will be a game changer for self reliance in the Indian defense manufacturing sector".
Further defense minister Rajnath Singh said: "The LCA-Tejas is going to be the backbone of the IAF fighter fleet in the years to come. LCA-Tejas Incorporates a large number of new technologies many of which were never attempted in India".
Tejas Mk-1A is an indigenously designed, developed and manufactured state of art modern 4+ generation combat fighter aircraft. This Aircraft is equipped with critical operational capabilities of AESA radar, BVR missiles, electronic warfare, suite and air to air refueling. LCA-Tejas incorporates a large number of new technologies many of which were nevertheless attempted in India. The indigenous content of LCA-Tejas is 50 % in Mk 1A variant, which will be enhanced to 60%. Rajnath Singh said.
The 40 LCAs already ordered by the IAF and deal for new 83 jets will take total number of Tejas variants to 123 Ma-1A fighter jets. The manufacturing of LCA-Tejas will be done by state owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India. The project will give push to Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative and boost to defence industry in the country. MoD said: "About 500 Indian companies including MSMEs will be working in the design and manufacturing sectors with HAL in this procurement."
