First treaty to ban nuclear weapons has been made effective by United Nation General Assembly on January 22, 2021. All states having nuclear weapons including India rejected to become the party of this treaty. "We are not party of treaty nor support it", said India.

Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) or Nuclear Weapons Ban is the first legally international agreement to prohibit nuclear weapons with the ultimate goal being their total elimination.

What is Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty

"TPNW includes a comprehensive set of prohibitions on participating in any nuclear weapon activities. These include undertakings not to develop, test, produce, acquire, possess, stockpile, use or threaten to use nuclear weapons. The Treaty also prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons on national territory and the provision of assistance to any State in the conduct of prohibited activities. States parties will be obliged to prevent and suppress any activity prohibited under the TPNW undertaken by persons or on territory under its jurisdiction or control. The Treaty also obliges States parties to provide adequate assistance to individuals affected by the use or testing of nuclear weapons, as well as to take necessary and appropriate measure of environmental remediation in areas under its jurisdiction or control contaminated as a result of activities related to the testing or use of nuclear weapons." United Nation.

TPNW was adopted in July, 2017 and has been open for signature since September, 2017. Now, Nuclear weapons ban treaty entered into the force by United Nation General Assembly on January 22, 2021. Signatory countries will not be allowed to produce or test or transfer or any kind of assistanshipt and encourement of nuclear weapons.

India's stand on TPNW

India does not support Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). MEA said "As far as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is concerned, India did not participate in the negotiations on the TPNW and has consistency made it clear thta it will not become a party the Treaty". Not only India, but none of nuclear states are party to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. At present only nine coutries in all over the world having nuclear weapons: US, France, UK, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. Out of these nine coutries only five countries are UN recognised: US, France, UK, Russia and China.  NATO has also refused to support the treaty. Even Japan, the only country which had been targeted by nuclear weapons in world war - II by US, did not support this treaty. Government of Japan said: "Pusrsuing a treaty ban is not realistic with nuclear and non nuclear states so sharply divided over it".

Currently, 86 countries are signatory of this treaty and 52 members submitted retified agreement. Retifing is the process of implementing treaty in own country. for example, if one Nation has signed on an international treaty, Nation has to implement it in own country.
